The Modern Transportation Museum is conveniently located in the highly accessible western sub center of Osaka, near Osaka harbor. The Museum exhibits locomotives and other means of transportation, to aid in the study of traffic science. Founded in 1962, it presents the rapid technological progress made by the railway, with emphasis on future development.

The buildings that house the exhibition rooms, library and reference room and the collection storage room are located under the overhead railway of the JR Osaka Loop Line Bentencho Station. For the display of large rolling stock, they have also set up an outdoor exhibition area that is nearly as large as their indoor exhibition area.

Materials in the collection include railway cars, machine, tools, railway implements as well as books and documents, audio- visual materials like films, and printed materials like posters, labels and tickets.

Operated by the West Japan Railway Company, the museum displays numerous steam locomotives, several of which are operated throughout the year.

Hours: 10a.m- 5:30p.m; Tue- Sun.
