Osaka Hokko Yacht Club was established in 1988, one year after the opening of Osaka Hokko Yacht Harbor, the only yacht harbor in the City of Osaka. As of January 1, 2005, 117 members are registered.
The club aims to give opportunities to people in Japan as well as overseas to familiarize themselves with the sea through yachting as the main, but not only, marine sports and recreation activity.
The annual programs are monthly club race, seasonal cruising, 3 times a year, Tenjin Festival race in July, Boat Tengoku (offering exposure to sailing) held on a national holiday called ''Ocean Day'' in July, Super- joint cup race in November and last but not the least Christmas party in December.
Apart from the above, the club supports the Melbourne/Osaka double- handed yacht race which is held every four years.
Tenjin Festival Race is the main race of the club and is held in July. In 1993 the race was created in the form of an offering to Osaka Tenmangu Shrine symbolizing 'the God of the Sea.'Mr. Nakakita, public relations manager then, and Mr. Nakanishi worked very hard to negotiate with the shrine to get permission to organize the race.
