The cherry blossom (sakura) is Japan's unofficial national flower. This festival has been celebrated for many centuries and takes a very prominent position in Japanese culture.

There are many dozens of different cherry tree varieties in Japan, most of which bloom for just a couple of days in spring. The Japanese celebrate that time of the year with hanami (cherry blossom viewing) parties under the blooming trees.

With the arrival of spring comes the season of sakura, or flowering cherry trees. And with the blossoming of the sakura comes the ritual of the cherry blossom festival.

Cherry blossom festivals are held throughout the city, almost anywhere that cherry trees are found. Visit any shrine or park for various sakura viewing activities both by day and by night, including traditional dances, lantern lighting, and food and drink.

Cherry blossoms can be viewed from January to June in different regions in Japan. There are hundreds of cherry blossom festivals held during this time.
