Featuring innovations such as a Japanese- invented movable arch and a rotating stage with trapdoor, Shin Kabukiza is the Kansai region's best known kabuki theater. This large, elegant theater has seating for almost 2,000 and is often fully booked, which is an indication of the quality of the performances it stages.

The theater has a total capacity of 1,871, with a deep, wide stage, and a remarkable closeness between the stage and the seats. Since no microphone is used in many of the performances staged here, including Kabuki, the theater has been designed in order that people in the back seats can hear the natural voices of performers on the stage.

For the rest of the year, it stages manzai, or two- man comedy acts, with some of the top artists of this genre; modern drama; and popular variety shows.

There is a restaurant that serves Japanese food and alcoholic beverages as well as lunch boxes, a coffee shop, and a shop that sells theater memorabilia. The theater is easily recognizable for its characteristic architecture in the T'ang gabled style of the Momoyama Period.

Hours: vary.
