It is one of the most popular museums in Osaka, attracting thousands of visitors for its superb presentation of exquisite pieces of art from artists both past and present.

Opened in 1980 in Daisen Park, The Sakai City Museum showcases materials reflecting the archaeological background, history, art, industry and various other aspects of Sakai. A particularly attractive feature is a section presenting Sakai in feudal and early modern times when the city was a prosperous commercial center.

Among the exhibits are a model of a tradesman's house and a Namban folding screen depicting the manners and customs of Westerners and Namban lacquer ware. The museum also exhibits a collection related to Yosano Akiko (1878- 1942), a famous Tanka poet born in Sakai.

Sakai City Museum presents the history of Sakai in a clear, easily understood format. Exhibits occupying about 1,330 square meters of gallery space introduce the ancient, medieval, pre modern and modern periods of the city's history. Information is also available in video form, and the Museum holds special exhibits focusing on selected themes every spring and autumn.

Hours: 9:30 am to 5:15 pm (Doors close at 4:30 pm.)
Closed: Mondays and days following national holidays.
