Established in 1977, the museum aims to show how Japanese art developed in relation to world art, without restrictions of period or regional divisions.
The National Museum of Art, Osaka, is one of the national museums established as a facility of the Agency for Cultural Affairs.
Centering its focus on contemporary art (mainly that created after 1945), it collects and exhibits objects of art and other related materials necessary to clarify the relation between the development of Japanese art and international art.
The museum creates its exhibits in such a way that visitors can easily see not only the close relation between the realization and development of Japanese art and international art, but also new trends in the contemporary art of Japan and the world.
Located in the middle of a park commemorating Expo '70, this museum serves as a center of cultural activities. A major exhibition, held once a year, deals with international influences and exchanges in contemporary art, while "Recent Works" presents the work of active artists today in a series of individual exhibitions.
Hours: 10a- 5p Tu- Su, closed Dec 28- Jan 4.
